ACT CPD calendar

2015 has been a busy year for the ACT's CPD Committee, with a wide range of well supported events held throughout the year

The first event for the year was held in February, sponsored by Knight Frank, covered lending practices and compliance issues within the self managed superannuation industry. Larry Musolino from Westpac and Vanessa Rae from Greenlight looked at how financiers deal with this ever changing industry, which has undergone significant growth in recent years, as well as ongoing compliance issues and area of opportunity for investors.

The annual Industry Forum was held in April, with a focus this year on foreign investment within the ACT property market. Presenters included Tony Mount from Elan Property Group, Alastair Sinston from the ANU, Janu Chan from St George Bank, and Chief Minister Andrew Barr MLA as our keynote speaker over lunch.

The event provided insight into key drivers for investment into Australia and the ACT property markets, as well as investment activity globally; an overview on the student accommodation market, with a particular focus on development within ANU and future opportunities for this industry in Canberra; plus an economic update and outline of the ACT Government’s vision for Canberra and challenges faced in attracted offshore investment in local projects. The day was sponsored by St George Bank, Trinity Law, Knight Frank, the Land Development Agency and Section 63.

A banking and finance update was provided by ANZ Bank in May. Opteon Property Group sponsored a very well supported event presented by Austin Szramka, David Ismay and Nadine Maroney who covered off issues and trends relating to current lending practices and risk within both commercial and residential lending markets.

This was followed by the joint API & REI State of the Market breakfast in July, which was more popular than ever this year. Our speakers Dr Andrew Wilson of Australian Property Monitors and Stephen Byron from the Capital Airport Group provided their insight into the current state of play in Canberra’s residential and commercial property markets. Andrew Kerford then gave an update on the ACT Governments 'Mr Fluffy buyback program' and detailed the challenge the government faces in rolling out the demolition of affected properties and sale of blocks over the coming years. The event was again sponsored by ANZ Bank and Meyer Vandenberg Lawyers.

A second event was held in July, when Englobo hosted and sponsored a site inspection of their recently completed ‘Element’ project at Kingston Foreshore. The event started with a rooftop presentation of the development, which allowed a unique insight into many design ideas and features of the building, with a guided tour of the residential units, commercial office space, retail space and basement car park stackers following.

Clayton Utz again hosted and sponsored a legal update for members following a successful event in 2014. The event was presented by Alfonso Del Rio and Helen Sheridan, who addressed the issue of emails leading to immediately binding agreements. Helen presented a range of contemporary case studies and court decisions on this issue, with Alfonso then running through several practical examples property professionals may encounter. Once again, the event was very well attended with many engaging questions and scenarios discussed.

The CPD Committee is currently pursuing a range of potential event ideas for the remaining months of the year, with JLL set to present their annual Commercial Property Market Wrap following a very successful event in 2014.

We welcome your feedback, and particularly encourage any potential event ideas.
